英國廣播公司(BBC)新聞網今天(12日)報導，最新研究顯示，4歲以下的年幼駱駝可能是中東呼吸症候群(MERS)的主要來源。
一支國際科學團隊針對800多隻單峰駱駝展開研究，以尋找目前或曾經感染MERS的證據。結果發現，九成以上的駱駝都在2歲前感染MERS，而且病毒散播的情形比成年駱駝來得普遍。這項研究刊登於「新興傳染病期刊」(Emerging Infectious Diseases)。
科學家認為，改變畜牧方式或許可以降低人類感染MERS的機率，例如延後幾年再把年幼駱駝帶離母駱駝身邊。
歐洲、亞洲和非洲等25個國家都出現MERS疫情，目前超過1,100起確診病例，死亡人數也已超過400人，其中以沙烏地阿拉伯最為嚴重，南韓也已經出現11起死亡病例。
有鑑於MERS對人類健康的危害，科學家正努力尋找病毒來源，希望找到預防人類感染的方法。
